Rumour: iPad 3 Is Smaller, Production To Start In January

This rumour seems to always circulate at this time; but it's retaining it's travels around the web, indicating what we might expect from the next-generation of Apple’s iPad. If rumours prove to be correct, we might well be seeing a much smaller model from the rather beefy iPad 2.

First reported by electronics industry site DigiTimes on Friday; Samsung Electronics, LG Display and Sharp have allegedly delivered around one million units of high-resolution flat panels to Apple in October, with touch module makers TPK Holding and Wintek shipping their respective units to Apple any time now. Apple’s product manufacturer, Foxconn Electronics, is expected to start production of the iPad 3 early next year, according to industry sources close to DigiTimes.

As ever, it’s important to take such industry reports with a pinch of salt – if previous months’ allegations prove correct, there’s some 6 million-plus iPhone 5’s in storage. Nevertheless, the suggestion that the next iPad will pack a much leaner 7.85-inch display rather than the 9.7-inch display boasted by the iPad 2 is wholly intriguing, suggesting that this might well be a budget version of the current device, and inclines the possibility Apple is looking to claw back some of the market enjoyed by Amazon and the Kindle Fire.

Of course this is all speculation, so we'll see what happens.
