Apple confirms iOS5 battery problems, fix on the way in iOS 5.0.1

Apple have gone out and confirmed to All Things D that there is, infact, a battery draining issue with the recent release of iOS5.

"A small number of customers have reported lower than expected battery life on iOS 5 devices," Apple said in a statement. ""We have found a few bugs that are affecting battery life and we will release a software update to address those in a few weeks."

They didn't specify what these bugs were; but the leading possiblities in our mind are the iCloud syncing and notifications; but there's been various other tweaks that people have found over the preceeding weeks.  Apple have proactively (and conveniently) released iOS 5.0.1 beta to developers to see whether this will tackle the issues faced, with the intent of releasing it "in a few weeks."

iOS 5.0.1 beta contains improvements and other bug fixes including:

  • Fixes bugs affecting battery life
  • Adds multitasking gestures to original iPad
  • Resolves bugs with documents in the Cloud
  • Improves voice recognition for Australian users using dictation
  • Contains security improvements.

As always, we'll be testing this to see how (or if) the battery life improves, now that they have acknowledged the issue.
