The 5 Most Exciting Announcements From The Game Awards 2017
What’s the best bit of The Game Awards? It’s not the accolades themselves, but rather the many world premiere trailers and reveals. Here are five you should be excited about...
If we were to address the winners, I’d say they were very well deserved. What Remains of Edith Finch is a belter of a game, it’s fair to say The Last Of Us Part II is definitely my most anticipated game and The Legend of Zelda earned its Game of The Year award.
But we’re not here for those. We all watched along for the sneaky world premieres - the teaser trailers and sneaky reveals. And while some weren’t so exciting (a new map on PUBG and expansion packs do nothing for me), there were five that have got me so hyped about the future of video games.
*In no particular order*
1. In The Valley Of Gods
I loved Firewatch (in fact, here’s a playthrough I did) - developer Campo Santo’s first foray into gaming since leaving Telltale Games. It’s gripping narrative, brilliant scripting and fantastic acting, all wrapped in a beautiful art style was nothing short of scrumptious gaming for the soul.
The moment this scrappy company’s name appeared on screen, I was sure of yet another amazing title. Taking you back to the 1920s, you will venture into the middle of the Egyptian desert as an explorer & filmmaker - with the hopes of making an impossible movie. Count me in!
2. Death Stranding
I have never said “what” more times than during the airing of this trailer. Metal Gear Solid mastermind Hideo Kojima returned with a brand new glimpse of his new title, and it has ascended from rather baffling to downright bizarre.
Honestly, I’m not sure quite how to describe it - a dose of Alien, mixed with a pinch of Stranger Things and a generous cup of Japanese Horror. Clocking in at 8-minutes, its confusion is its sheer hype factor.
3. A Way Out
Sofa-based, local multiplayer - what a concept, huh!? It may be dying in the eyes of big games developers (cheers for that, by the way), but we still crave for it. In fact, I’ve still got my PS2 set up for such an occasion (Timesplitters 2 is the best for it).
Luckily, A Way Out will hopefully reintroduce players to this. It’s a campaign that’s been explicitly designed to be played through with another person. And for those playing online, the second player does NOT have to have a copy of the game, which comes out March 23rd.
4. Bayonetta 3
It was a cold November evening when I got my review copy of the original Bayonetta. After being disappointed by the crop of recent hack’n’slash titles, this one blew me away with its insane speed and razor-sharp controls.
And now, Platinum Games are returning with its third iteration - exclusive for Nintendo Switch. We didn’t see anything other than a simple confirmation that it's in the works, but that’s all I needed to see.
5. Dreams
Media Molecule has been deadly silent about their title announced way back in 2015. It got me fearing the worst, that Sony was working towards shutting down their studio. However, with one sigh of relief and a beautiful trailer, my hope was restored.
A magnificent art style, mind-boggling variety and what seems to be a completely blank canvas of player creation, expect to play an absolute belter when this comes out in 2018.
