MC Hammer launching his own search engine.
Don't type Hammertime into it, you could break the internet. News emerged at this week's Web 2.0 Summit that the rapper is crafting his own search engine.
Called Wiredoo, Hammer (Stanley Kirk Burrell) says his search engine "will not attempt to compete with mainstream browsers like Google or Bing" (even though people can't touch him, he isn't ready to take on that kind of a challenge). The differentiator is the service will "add keyword relationship information to search results."
At the summit, the rapper used simple examples like cars and homes and showed how a search for the latter would produce information based upon location and each results relationship to other items: neighbourhoods, local schools, mortgages, insurance etc. It's an interesting concept that you can sign up to beta here.
"It’s not a competitive attempt to recreate search," he said.
"You can always make things better. There's always a next version.
"Do we really need another search engine? Of course not.
"But if something can be an added value, then we’ll find a definite use for it."
This comes after the likes of Sean Parker and Vic Gundotra took part in their discussions. Got to admit, all these rappers becoming webeneurs/tech-entrepreneurs is a rather admirable effort to see. Would rather see a new album though, parachute pants and everything!
