Obsidian Developing South Park RPG, More Details Revealed

A game based on Trey Parker and Matt Stone's crude adult animated show South Park was no surprise – after all, we've previously seen the IP on consoles – but what we weren't expecting was the same project to be an ambitious, turn-based RPG from veteran role-playing developer Obsidian Entertainment (Star Wars: Knights Of The Old Republic II, Fallout: New Vegas). 

First revealed when Game Informer publicised its January cover stars (with South Park favourites reflected as their in-game fantasy alter-egos), the issue is now making its way through subscribers letterboxes with a handful of juicy details about the game in tow. According to the popular US publication, the title is slated for release “sometime” in 2012 for the PS3, Xbox 360 and PC and will be in-keeping with the series' 2D visual identity.

Purportedly, players will fill the shoes of a new kid in town who will later have to protect South Park from a “wide range of threats” in a more conventional role-playing adventure featuring five unique character classes – wizard, rogue, adventurer, paladin and an as-yet unconfirmed fifth class – turn-based combat and item management. More traditional RPG menus (which we take to mean the quest log, map and inventory) will all be accessed through your character's smart-phone, MCV has reported. The series' writers Matt Stone and Trey Parker are on script-writing duties.

Having quite the knack for taking on established IP, Obsidian's next move after the rather disappointing Dungeon Siege III was always going to be interesting. With a wealth of publishing deals already under its belt (including Bethesda for F:NV, Square Enix for DS3 and LucasArts with KOTOR II), the partnership with THQ and South Park Digital Studios promises great things for Kenny, Cartman, Stan, Kyle et al. Let's just hope the finished game will live up to the show's unfaltering track record.
