ZTE Teases 5.9-Inch, Full HD Windows Phone Phablet

 

With a display of 5-inches and a quad-core 1.6 GHz processor combined with 2GB of RAM, the Galaxy Note 2 is a beast in both stature and performance. But though its magnificent size somewhere between phone and tablet (the newly-coined ‘phablet’ is apt) is likely to turn many off, it still, just about mind, works. Tipping the scales at 5.9-inch, a new Windows Phone being teased by ZTE looks to be another matter entirely.

Outed by the company’s marketing chief in a picture tweeted to Chinese site Weibo alongside a description that the handset boasts a full high-definition screen (1920 x 1080 pixels, what appears to be the next big marker for high-end smartphones), notably the device also sports an older Windows Phone logo, a version of Microsoft’s mobile OS that does not support high-definition. Only with Windows Phone 8 does the software support high-def displays, and even then it’s only 720p.

Either ZTE is pulling our leg, or the handset is a very early prototype that the handset maker couldn’t help but publicise early for some much-needed exposure in the wake of ferocious competition. If real, it'll be an interesting release to keep an eye on. It can't be just us thinking that in trying to capture both the smartphone and lower-tier tablet market, ZTE will likely manage neither. Still, the proof is in the pudding.
