Six million people in Britain are still not using the internet
It seems insane to think that every adult doesn't have at least one way to access to the internet - but according to a survey Office for National Statistics, 11 percent of the adult population don't. That means 5.9 million people have never used the internet.
While this doesn't seem great, the good news to take away from this is the percentage's definitely falling. "Since the survey began in 2011, adults aged 16 to 24 years have consistently shown the highest rates of internet use, with each successively older age group reporting a lower rate of use," the Office for National Statistics commented.
Unsurprisingly, over half of these 5.9 million adults were aged 75 or over. While the percentage has been steadily decreasing from 76% of the total in 2011 to 61% this year, this age group also have the highest rate of lapsed usage, meaning that even though they do start surfing the web they won't necessarily carry on doing so.
Drilling down into gender, there's no difference in younger ages. But looking again at over over 75s, while 41% of men used the internet, only 27% of women were users. Looking at levels of those in the UK with disabilities, their levels of never using the internet are much higher to those without, accounting for 3.3 million people.
Luckily, if text bores you, the Office of National Statistics have visualised the location information and the news is simple. If you live on the Isle of Anglesey, your likelihood of using the internet is significantly less. A whopping 41% of people have either never used the internet, or used it more than 3 months ago.
Finally, and most unsurprisingly, 99% of adults aged 16-24 are regular internet users, adding towards the 1 percent growth in Britons on the web.
