Someone just found a rare Nintendo Playstation console prototype

Someone on Reddit has shared pictures of what looks like the prototype of the SNES-CD, a cancelled collaboration between Sony and Nintendo to bring a CD-ROM attachment to your Super Nintendo.

Found in a 'box of junk,' the anonymous user explained the whole story behind discovering it shortly before many of Reddit's biggest communities were shut down in response to the firing of Victoria Taylor. "My dad worked for a company, apparently one of the guys he used to work with, I think his name was Olaf, used to work at Nintendo and when my dad's company went bankrupt, my dad found it in a box of ‘junk’ he was supposed to throw out."

In the late '80s and early '90s, Sony wasn't in the gaming business at all, and Nintendo had partnered with them to bring their CD technology to the SNES. Over the years the two companies had disputes over licensing and plans for the console, which eventually led to the relationship ending, but not before 200 prototypes were made. Eventually Nintendo announced a new partnership with Phillips, so Sony's CEO (at the time) Ken Kuturagi took the technology and launched the Playstation in 1994.
