Samsung Galaxy S4 Announced
Samsung have unveiled the Galaxy S4, their next generation smartphone at the 'UNPACKED' event. Titled the 'Life Companion,' it brings a new set of features to the table. Aesthetically, little has changed; but plenty of software and hardware upgrades are present.

Following the successful GALAXY S series, this phone is yet another great proof point of people-inspired innovation. Compared to the Galaxy S3, this upcoming phone is slightly longer; but thinner at 136.6 x 69.8 x 7.9mm (5.38 x 2.75 x 0.31 inch), and lighter at 130g (4.59 ounces). The 5" display is a full 1080p Full HD Super AMOLED panel, boasting a rather pixel dense 441ppi. This matched with Corning's Gorilla Glass 3 makes for an extremely sharp and durable screen.
Storage options available with the phone are 16/32/64gb, with Micro SD card expansion. And alongside the usual sensors (Accelerometer, Digital Compass, GPS, etc), it also comes with a Temperature and Humidity sensor. Powering it is a 1.6GHz Exynos Octa-core chip, with 2GB RAM, and keeping this beast alive is a 2600 MaH battery.
In terms of connectivity, the phone will come with 4G LTE, Wi-FI (standards a/b/g/n, and the upcoming ac), Bluetooth 4.0, and an IR blaster for TV remote usage.
The camera, as many blogs have predicted is a 13 megapixel sensor, with a 2 megapixel front facing shooter. The Galaxy S 4 also presents a new 'Dual Camera' function, that allows simultaneous use of both front and rear cameras, for both photo and video. What's more, this will also be enabled for a 'Dual Video Call' implementation, which as I'm sure you've guessed by the name, will use both cameras during the call.
The camera functionality extends beyond Dual Camera, as the device is also equipped with 12 shooting modes including 'Drama Shot', which allows you to see all the action in one continuous time-lapse, and 'Sound & Shot', which captures the sound around you as a photo is taken, adding an audio layer of depth to photos. And, rather amazingly, 'Eraser' can use a composite shot to effectively 'rub out' people walking through the background.
Underneath all the wild software implementations and UI tweaks is Android 4.2.2, the most recent version, which is a rare inclusion in smartphones on release.
'S Translator' brings a Samsung version of Google's Translate to life, complete with audio playback. Simply talk into your phone and it will playback voice in the selected language. Beyond this, it will translate text as well, being embedded into key email and messaging apps.
Those with an S-Pen will know of the technology that enables them to float their pen over the top of the display to expand content. 'Air View' now allows users to do the same thing, just with your fingers. Hover over to preview the content of an email, S Planner, image gallery or video without having to open it. You can even see a magnified view on the internet browser, or a phone number saved in the speed dial on the keypad. With 'Air Gesture', you can change the music track, scroll up and down a web page, or accept a call with a wave of your hand.
With 'S Voice Drive' you can activate commands via voice control for optimization when driving. Once connected with a car Bluetooth, the phone automatically turns into driving mode converting text to speech so you can easily and safely check messages with no need to look at the screen.
Samsung GALAXY S 4 will be available from Q2 in UK, with EE announced as a partner; but expect it to be on plenty more carriers by release date!
