Sony and Disney Start Streaming Films Still In Cinemas
No industry resists change like the film industry, millions have been spent over the decades to keep the silver screen well away from our familiar four walls. Sony and Disney have boldly moved into the unknown, piloting a trial that allows the residents of South Korea to watch on demand some films that are still being shown in the theatres.
This is in an attempt to curb the rates of piracy that plagues the industry in Asia, giving greater access to the films being most heavily advertised at the time. Doing the trial in South Korea makes a lot of sense, as it's a big enough market that they can see the real impact of it; but with the safety of the language barrier protecting it's main English speaking markets.
Depending on how well the trial goes, we could see other studios follow suite and change the way we see new films.
