Social Media Prosecution Guidelines Released By CPS
The Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) today has released a document outlining guidelines for dealing with potentially aggressive, or offensive posts on social media sites. The document urges judges to factor in context, public interest and even whether the post could be seen as “banter”.
#1ReasonWhy: Women Expose Sexism In The Video Game Industry On Twitter
Female video game fans, writers and professionals have taken to Twitter to express their thoughts on gender discrimination, online sexual harassment and inequality in the gaming world. It started over 24 hours ago, in response to Twitter user @Burning_Luke asking, "Why aren't there more female game creators?"
Lord McAlpine, You Cannot Sue Every Twitter User
Can you imagine what it must feel like to be publically branded a pedophile? That's exactly what happened to the former Tory party grandee Lord McAlpine. Is it any wonder he wanted to clear his name. In the past, if your reputation was injured the law gave you the chance to sue for slander,or in this case libel. The problem is, how can you sue tens of thousands of people who use Twitter? Obviously you can't, and that's where the problem lies.
We're Hiring: News Writers And Editors
Every day we are thankful to our audience of over 250,000 people for spending some of their precious time on this crazy planet we call Earth checking out the content we produce. And as these numbers grow on a daily basis, we realise that the team needs to grow alongside this. With this in mind, New Rising Media is looking to hire a load of news writers and editors from across the globe!
'We Know Your House' Shows How Many People Reveal Their Home Address On Twitter
It's fair to say people have used social media to the point of realising exactly what they should or shouldn't share for the sake of their online safety. But that doesn't seem to have stopped people revealing their home addresses, as the social experiment weknowyourhouse.com demonstrates.
Wearable Computing Taken To The Next Level With T-Shirt OS
With technology such as Google Glass on the horizon, it's fair to say that wearable computing is on the verge of becoming the next trend in gadgets. But where could the possibilities go beyond there? This is what fashion company CuteCircuit and Scotch whisky distiller Ballantine's (of all the companies) explored with what they're calling 'tshirtOS:' the world's first wearable, sharable, programmable t-shirt.
Editorial: Grief Should Not Be Social
Ever had that unswallowable lump in the back of your throat as you watch something terrible happen? Upon watching the details slowly unfold about the Batman premiere shooting in Aurora on Friday, it's fair to say that many more than myself probably felt this. A tense few hours of reports commenced, showing the true strength of social media in keeping the planet perfectly synchronised in referrence to any event, and bringing a community together in condolence lending.

The Value Of A 'Like.' An Experiment In Buying Fans
There's a rule in social media marketing that many stick to: your fans should be earned, not bought. It's a guideline that's become abundantly clear over the past year, with an explosion of controversy recently from an experiment conducted by the BBC in this area. But is this really the case?
O2 Responds To Infuriated Network Users On Twitter. Perfect Crisis Management
So O2 haven't exactly been the most reliable network over the last couple days. A huge amount of customers have been affected by the network outages across the country, so many have taken to Twitter to vent their anger. Luckily, the in-house social media team of @O2 were waiting, with some rather hilarious responses.
@grahamcummings7 Maybe later, got tweets to send right now.

'Science: It's A Girl Thing!' The Backlash Against The European Commission
The European Commission has made a great error. A frankly moronic error that makes them appear to be misogynistic idiots trying to sell a new perfume for teenagers called “Science”. But no, the following video isn’t advertising a new perfume (“with subtle hints of sulphur and a lingering scent of formaldehyde in a beautiful bottle designed to pay homage to the double helix”) it’s in fact trying to interest young women in science.
Money Is The Death Of Social Media
Do you ever get the feeling when talking to someone unaware of the concept of a socially connected online world (the Grandmother in my example), that they just don't understand the value of social media? The idea, while seeming wholly legitimate to yourself just seems preposterous to them, no matter how much you demonstrate or present.
This sort of thing happens on the trading floors of NASDAQ as well; but the interpretation is quite the opposite, as you've probably seen from the tumbling stock price of Facebook, since Zuckerberg rang the bell. As investors look upon a social network they don't see community, they see influence and a possible return on their investment. This is a fair enough analysis of the situation, anybody would want to see their money returned with extra; but in the grand scheme of things it's a fatal blow to the very product they're investing in.
The Missing Link In Social Media Marketing
In my field of work you become aware to many different guides from many different people about the prominent rise of their clients' brands on social media. In fact, this field has become clustered with too many different programs, using various marketing buzz words and abbreviations to the point that the underlying concept has indeed been buried.
As a person who has delved into this sector since a dissertation into the area that cracked the University board's metaphorical monacles in a wake-up call to the presence of this critical asset in today's online space, I've become aware of one thing. These books and guides are over-complicating what is needed, hiding the solution and are, therefore, incorrect. Allow me to throw in my two cents of simplification into this predicament.
Porn Star Sued By Man For Not Following Him Back On Twitter
A man in his 40s has taken famous Chinese porn actress (star of such classics as Big T*ts Zombie), Sola Aoi to court for refusing to follow him back on Twitter after repeated requests.
Such is the flippant nature of the judicial system.
Meet Melvin: The Socially Connected Travelling Rube Goldberg Machine
We all love seeing a Rube Goldberg inventions, with a simple task being executed in the most unnecessarily complex of ways. While it's quite fair to say this form of entertainment is rather timeless, nobody has really brought the formula into the 21st Century.
Klout Parody 'Klouchebag' Measures Your Asshattery On Twitter
While the practicalities of being able to put a quantiative score on your social media influence extends far into the business world, the very concept of checking your own coolness is open to strong parody, as new website Klouchebag demonstrates.
Is Social Networking Killing Our Social Lives?
A study commissioned by badoo.com explores just how socially better off our lives are with the use of social networking. The statistics are concerning to say the least.

Social Media In TV Ads Proven Effective
A survey conducted by Accenture has identified that a third of Americans have used social media as a result of TV adverts. This has definitely surprised us to say the least.
Facebook Suggests Friends You Don't Talk To For Acquaintance List
After introducing the 'close friends' and 'acquaintances' listing options last fall to a rather lukewarm reception, it was clear that the functionality was not something people wanted to waste their time with. Well Facebook thinks it has the answer, with the 'Acquaintance List' suggestion box.
BBC Tracks Down An Internet Troll
Trolling. We're all victims (and some of us perpetrators) of such internet activity. And while there is a wide variation of severity on the scale of what would be considered to be trolling, it became part of the discourse in yesterday's campaign against cyber-bullying, titled 'Safer Internet Day.' This expanded to an episode of Panorama, which managed to trace the location of infamous troll Nimrod Severn, and track the real man down for an 'ambush' interview.
Design Project Visualises How Well You Know Your Facebook Friends
Out of all the Facebook friends you have, their probably is a good chance that you may not physically know a good percentage of them. So the question would be just how many of them are what you'd call 'real' friends? This is what designer Colin Pinegar answered in his project, simply titled 'Best Friends.'
