So a rather basic looking blog titled NoHopeLeft.com has been growing in audience, displaying a series of inauspicious photographs, 'Blair witch' style videos, and a conspiracy theory about linked cities.  But from all the Biohazard logos dotted across different pieces of media on the blog, we can't help but detect the viral marketing capability here, possibly for the next Resident Evil.

Video game developer sentenced to death in Iran

Former US Marine and developer at Kuma Games, Amir Mizra Hekmati has been convicted of espionage and sentenced to death for developing a game that's critical of Iran, with the courts going so far as to call him a spy for the CIA.

Hekmati was accused specifically on propaganda charges: creating games intended to influence the public opinion surrounding US operations in Iran.

All rumours point to Next Xbox and PS4 debut at E3 2012

UK games industry magazine MCV has reported on information from a reliable source, claiming that we will see the announcement of Microsoft and Sony's next-generation consoles at E3 2012.

In what would be a strategically sound move to divert at least some of the attention from the imminent Wii U, all signs thus far have directed to an announcement pretty soon, and some of us expected it to be an E3 effort from Microsoft, seeing as it's still the most significant name in video games expos.

Apple accidentally releases "Gamestore" app, then removes it

 

Apple haven't exactly been 'on the ball' lately with keeping stuff under wraps, and today has been no exception.  Apple accidentally published an app titled 'Gamestore' to the iTunes app store, and removed it pretty soon after.

The app was discovered by Florian Schimanke on December 31st, and seems to be (as hinted to by the name) a store for games.  The description was rather sparse: "This application allows you to buy different things from within the app."

Crysis 2 Ends 2011 As Most Pirated Game

 

For game developers and publishers alike, earning recognition for their game through topping an end of year category (whether Game of the Year, Best FPS or Best RPG) is a prize that money can't buy. And then there are those that no company wants to win – namely 'The Most Pirated Game Of 2011'.

According to TorrentFreak, this year's crown went to the PC version of EA and Crytek's behemoth Crysis 2 which was downloaded approximately 3,920,000 times between its release in March 2011 and the end of the year.

Has GTA V's Release Date Been Outed by NME?

First, there was the official announcement trailer and a 'For Sale' sign alluding to a possible 24 May 2012 release date. Now, music magazine NME has stoked the fire for a possible May 2012 release launch with its own '20 Reasons To Be Excited For 2012' feature on its website.

Rockstar Games and GTA V take up the eighth spot, in which NME highlights how it expects “half the country to retreat indoors and draw the curtains in May when Grand Theft Auto 5 hits the shops”.

Sonic the Hedgehog 4 Episode II trailer released

Sega has capped off 2011 by giving us a teaser into what we can look forward to in 2012, as a short promo confirms Sonic The Hedgehog 4 Episode II for release next year.

The trailer is light on information, lacking any actual gameplay footage; but it confirms the return of Tails to the series and "the Rebirth of a Villain."  It's coming to Playstation Network, Xbox Live Arcade, iOS, Windows Phone and Android.  Nintendo Wii has been scratched off the list to receive this sequel.  Better luck next time.

Ministry Of Defence uses video game tech to increase combat simulation realism

Video game-esque combat simulations are nothing new in military training; but the MoD's war games have been turned down by recent trainees due to them not being realistic enough.

Turns out that compared to the visual quality of your standard war FPS games like Call of Duty have one-upped what was being used to train the fresh recruitsat the Ministry of Defence.  With this in mind, significant upgrades have been made to its simulations, in order to bring them up to par with the aforementioned console titles.

An Interview With Vivec Entertainment

Horror not only remains relatively untapped within the videogame industry, the sheer scarcity of genuinely frightening horror games is quite alarming.

While the spine-tingling genre tropes remain one of the most popular cinematically – it seems we're treated to another 'Scariest Film Of [Insert Year Here]' movie every other week – there is just a handful of truly memorable, scary experiences on this side of the interactive spectrum. Of course, they're certainly there if you look for them, beneath the copycat military FPS clones and third-person space marine shooters - we're talking Doom, Call of Cthulu, Silent Hill, Resident Evil, Condemned, F.E.A.R, Amnesia – but nevertheless it's a sad state of affairs when one of the most visceral, unnerving and engaging genres still sits largely absent from store shelves.
